Centre for Space Technologies

At the heart of Spaceport Cornwall is a unique set of facilities called the Centre for Space Technologies, (the CST).

These world leading R&D and innovation facilities has been designed to provide safe, dedicated and responsible access to space. The CST has been designed with a clear vision, to connect people, businesses and ideas to benefit People and Planet.

A Place for Space for Good.

The CST will be home to Spaceport Cornwall’s Satellite Integration Facility, a hangar-like building that will take satellites in one end, encapsulate them into the rocket fairing, and come out the other end, in the rocket, ready for launch.

There are two main facilities making up the CST. The Integration Facility (Chi An Mel) and the Operations Facility (Chi An Obera).

A further facility (Chi An Glena) will offer office space, and an inflatable clean room.

THE INTEGRATION FACILITY

The Integration Facility is a launch critical hangar-like building where Virgin Orbit and additional future launch operators, will test space technologies and satellites. Offering a 9m tall ISO8 grade clean room, gantry crane and 870sqm of integrated hall workspace, it’s where additional users will be able to test their products and services year-round outside of launch campaigns.

THE OPERATIONS FACILITY

The busiest area of the CST is the Operations Facility. Offering a range of flexible options from a hot desk in our open plan Collaboration Zone, to whole offices or laboratories, and even an operational Mission Ops Centre and clean room, it’s here space business will locate and collaborate, and where Responsible Launch services and research will be born. FINDING SOLUTIONS

The knowledge gained during the R&D of the products and services delivered within the CST will be used to solve some of the UK’s most challenging issues, including climate change, improving environmental and social sustainability.

This will, in turn, lead to further R&D activity in satellite hardware, software, testing and applications, accelerating the development of the space cluster here in Cornwall.
